Demolition of the former Cornerstone Baptist Church in Decatur began Tuesday to make way for QuikTrip.

Decatur EDC Director Thom Lambert said construction will begin in June at the site on the corner of Hale Street and U.S. 81/287.

The store and gas station is projected to open in February 2019.

It will be what the company officials call “Gen 3,” which is a new, modern style construction. It will have entrances not only on the front facing the gas pumps, but also on the two sides to help with circulation.

The store should employee 25-plus people and feature a QuikTrip kitchen. Menu items include breakfast pizza, regular pizza, toasted sandwiches, flat bread sandwiches, kolaches, salads, wraps, donuts and a roller gill for items like hot dogs.

Cornerstone Baptist Church built a new building at 2496 Deer Park Road and began holding services there in late 2017.
