Shannon receives contract extension

By Brian Knox |  Wise County Messenger

Longtime Decatur City Manager Brett Shannon received a contract extension at Monday’s meeting of the Decatur City Council.

Following a two-hour closed session for Shannon’s annual evaluation, the council unanimously agreed to extend his contract for another year and give him a 2 percent raise, effective Oct. 1.

The raise is the same percentage that city employees received in the 2019-2020 fiscal year budget that was recently approved.

In other business, the council took action on a number of rather routine items including the following:

  • The council approved a sign variance request from Wendy’s for a wall sign facing north at its location on Farm Road 51 South. City Planning Director Dedra Ragland said the request was made due to the Wendy’s corporate office changing branding at all its locations.
  • The council approved an encroachment agreement with Econolodge for a longtime pole sign located in Flusche Drive, an unopened right of way next to the property.

“I don’t think there is ever any intention of the city to open Flusche Drive and build a street there, but the right of way is there, and there are utilities there,” said City Engineer Earl Smith. “So this is a standard form that we always use. The only thing it says is that if we ever do need to use the right of way, the property owner will have to move the sign, but we don’t foresee that intention.”

  • The council approved closing the 100 block of North State and the 100 block of West Main from 5 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, for National Night Out.
  • The council approved a request by Olivia Black to hold a Turkey Trot 5K and 1K Fun Run on Thanksgiving (Nov. 28) closing the 100 blocks of State and Main from 7 to 11:30 a.m. Proceeds from the event will benefit Raquel’s Wings.
  • The council re-appointed Terry Berube, John Lanier and Eileen Standridge to the Planning and Zoning Commission for terms to expire Oct. 1, 2021.
  • The council accepted the resignation of Murvelle Chandler from the Zoning Board of Adjustment, the re-appointment of regular member Mark Duncum and appointment of Mark Ary as a regular member with terms to expire Oct. 1, 2021.
