Wise County broke its record for sales tax collections in a month for a second time in less than year, with the February disbursement this week.

Wise County received $663,353 off its half-cent levy. The tally shattered the previous high of $618,066 from May 2021.

The February disbursement from the Texas Comptroller is for sales tax collected in December, during the busy Christmas shopping season at stores and online.

“This blows that out of the water,” said Wise County Judge J.D. Clark. “This is the end of year and the holidays, but that’s a great sign that people were willing to spend money.”

In the first two months of the calendar year, Wise County has received $1.182 million in sales taxes. Since the start of the 2022 fiscal year in October, collections are more than $2.7 million. The county’s conservative budget for the year anticipated $5.1 million.
